Use Boot Camp Assistant or a virtual machine. Does “probably Lion or Snow Leopard: mean you don’t know the OS version? Look at the Apple menu > About This Mac.
Step by step:
— Buy a 32 or 64 bit versions of Windows 7 Home Premium, Professional, or Ultimate DVD.
— Open Boot Camp Assistant.
— If you lost your “Mac OS X DVD” or you bought a new Mac recently that has no DVDs, click to download the “Windows support”.
— Create a Windows partition. MAKE IT BIG ENOUGH.
— Insert the Windows DVD when the Boot Camp screen asks for it.
— Click the “Restart” button.
— Wait for Windows setup to copy files to the temp folder.
— Choose to do a fresh install.
— Select the Windows partition and click “Format”.
— When that is done, install.
— If you happen to be at the computer when it restarts (half way through), hold the option key for 20 seconds, and then choose the Windows HDD partition.
— When Windows finishes piddling around, remove the DVD.
— If you have the “Mac OS X Install DVD”, insert it.
— Wait.
— Click “Yes”.
— Click “Install”.
— When that is done, remove the DVD.
