‘High Level Exec’ Confirms 2019 iPhones Will Come with a New Charging Accessory

To be clear, this has nothing to do with the actual port on the 2019 iPhones. Apple is expected to stick with the Lightning port on its handsets, at least for this year.
But it means that Apple will package a USB-C charger and likely a Lightning to USB-C cable with its upcoming smartphones. That will allow for fast charging out of the box.
The last couple of iPhone generations have supported USB-C fast charging, but users need to buy a separate power adapter and cable to get it.
ChargerLab claimed in a tweet on Tuesday that Apple will ditch the ubiquitous 5W (slow-charging) power brick in favor of a power adapter that has a USB-C port. That information was apparently sourced by a “high level executive.”
It’s worth noting that ChargerLab has a very hit-or-miss track record when it comes to predicting Apple’s moves.
Last year, the site incorrectly reported that Apple would ditch the 5W brick for its 2018 iPhones in favor of the 18W power adapter that shipped with that year’s iPad Pros. It also claimed back in January that AirPower had entered mass production.
This particular rumor does have some precedent, however. Earlier this year, Japan-based blog Mac Otakara — which has a better track record — indicated that apple would ship its 2019 iPhones with the redesigned 18W power brick.
On the other hand, Mac Otakara reported in January that the 2019 lineup would still come with Apple’s aging 5W adapter. The 18W power brick rumor is newer, but it isn’t clear whether it’s sourced with more up-to-date information.
Switching to a USB-C power adapter may be one step toward ditching Lightning for good. It’s been three years since Apple made USB-C the only port on its MacBook lineup, and nearly a year since Apple switched its iPad Pros over to USB-C. Killing off the Lightning port in favor of a USB-C port on its iPhones just makes sense.
In any case, the 2019 iPhones are expected to be announced at a keynote event on Tuesday, Sept. 10. They’re rumored to sport triple-lens cameras, larger batteries, two-way wireless charging and other features.
