iPhone SE 2 Sales Projections

In a research note issued to investors this week, Kuo forecasts that Apple will ship at least 20 million iPhone SE 2 units throughout 2020.

However, that isn’t even an optimistic prediction, Kuo notes. The analyst predicts that Apple could sell as many as 30 million units through the year on the higher end of the spectrum.

For comparison’s sake, Kuo previously predicted that Apple would ship 70 to 75 million total 2019 iPhone units this year. That includes all three models — the iPhone 11, 11 Pro and 11 Pro Max.

Because of its much lower price point, the iPhone SE 2 is expected to sell very well in important markets like China and India. It may even allow Apple to go toe-to-toe with Huawei, whose sales have been slipping lately.

It may also entice current iPhone 6 or iPhone 6s owners who are holding out on buying a new handset to finally upgrade.

As far as other tidbits contained in today’s research note, Kuo added that the device will use a 10-layer substrate-like PCB for the motherboard. That’ll be a lower-cost material, which could explain the price savings of the iPhone SE 2.

The iPhone SE 2’s strong expected sales performance is likely a result of the fact that the device is going to be priced really low for a modern smartphone. According to past reports by Kuo, the iPhone SE 2 could start at $399.

What Will the iPhone SE 2 Be Like?

There’s a good chance that the iPhone SE 2 will replace Apple’s current iPhone 8 price tier, which actually starts at $449. That’s a similar price drop between the iPhone XR and its iPhone 11 successor.

Despite the name, the iPhone SE 2 is rumored to be more like an iPhone 8 than any past 4-inch handset that Apple has produced.

The device will retain some legacy features and components, such as a 4.7-inch display with fairly wide bezels, a single-lens rear camera, a Home button and a Touch ID fingerprint sensor.

On the other hand, Apple is expected to give the iPhone 8 form factor a modern overhaul with a blazingly fast A13 chipset and 3GB of RAM. That means it’ll sport similar performance and speed as Apple’s current flagship models — for a fraction of the price.

The iPhone SE 2 is rumored to debut in the first half of 2020, specifically sometime in the spring. Looking back at Apple’s past release timelines, previous “iPhone SE” devices have been announced in March.
