LG is currently in talks with Apple to supply the LCD display panels for the soon-to-come iPhone SE successor, industry sources told The Elec.

The report, which is likely genuine, pretty much confirms that the low-cost iPhone will retain an LCD-based display. That is fairly expected, given the low starting cost for the device.

The budget-friendly iPhone SE 2 is rumored for an early 2020 launch.

Past rumors about the upcoming iPhone SE 2 have suggested that it’ll be more like an iPhone 8 with a 4.7-inch display than an actual iPhone SE, which had a 4-inch screen. That includes credible reports from oft-accurate TF Securities analyst Ming-Chi Kuo.

Kuo’s predictions suggest that the device will be a straight successor to the iPhone 8, with a Home button, thick bezels and a fingerprint sensor.

That has disappointed many fans who are fond of the iPhone SE’s small and pocketable 4-inch form factor.

In any case, the device will still be fairly powerful. Kuo has previously forecast that it’ll pack an A13 Bionic chip and 3GB of RAM. That will put it on-par with many flagship and mid-range Android devices when it comes to performance despite its low rumored price point.

Kuo also says the device will be available in Space Gray, Silver and Red with both 64GB and 128GB storage capacities available. And despite being similar to the iPhone 8, it’s also expected to ship with Haptic Touch instead of 3D Touch.

While many current reports refer to the 4.7-inch handset as an “iPhone SE 2,” that probably isn’t its final name. Other possible names which have circulated include iPhone 8s or iPhone 9.

As mentioned earlier, the iPhone SE 2 is rumored to launch in the first quarter of 2020 (between January and March). It’s expected to start at $399.

In any case, the low-cost iPhone is largely expected to be a key growth driver for Apple’s smartphone business, with an estimated 30 million units shipped by the end of the year.
